The 3rd one contains several small clocks, some books (mostly history apparently,) a handful more small paintings of people, similar to the 1st bookcase, and a frame with many medals and ribbons pinned within. Ducats can tell the medals and ribbons are Karnnathi military, but is only able to identify two of them: the Skull of Atur - this is awarded to those placed in command of an undead unit. The Galifar Cross - usually called 'the GC' this silver-grey X-shaped medal is widely known as the highest military award still given in Karnnath, and is awarded for extreme valour in the face of the enemy.

The 4th one contains many more books, a half dozen delicate ceramic dolls with rich clothing, a large beer stein, a box with a small metal crank protruding from the side, an iron (finger) ring, and a tiny unicorn made of parchment.

A tinkling bittersweet tune, sounding old and small, comes from the box. You do not recognize it, but Tagor says "that's an old balladeer's song from Aundair. It's called The Roses of Daskaran. It's about a man in the army from Aundair who falls in love with a woman in Thrane, and it has something to do with a battlefield in Thrane, and when the woman goes there all she can see are roses where all the men died. Or maybe it was the man, and the woman was killed.. I'm not sure now."

Ducats scratches his head, then puts his picks away.

Adolf explains that the Vulyar Garrison is just beyond the town's edge, to the northeast. You can reach it by going north along Blackwood Lane until you come out at Presentation Street. At that point you turn right and keep going east, past the edge of town. He wishes you luck, and the guidance of the host.

Stepping out into the cold night, you see the first few tiny flakes of snow falling down, lit by the inn's windows above. Turning right and going one building down to the east, you then turn left up Blackwood Lane. The street is narrow, but not an alley, and gradually goes up and down as you walk along, occasionally passing under gates or 'tunnels' where buildings are constructed over it. The sky is black and starless, making the buildings seem to close in high above.

You come out onto Presentation Street, which is nearly as wide as the Orien Trade Road where it passes in front of your inn. Making a right, you head east. By the time you reach the smaller buildings at the outskirts of town, the snow is falling a bit more heavily. You have no difficulty yet at all in seeing the road, which remains cobbled for at least 200 yards before giving way to a wide, smooth dirt road, with only a few mud-borne potholes, now dry.

After another three or four hundred yards you see lights up ahead and off slightly to the left. They hang in the air for a time, until you see the outlines of a fortress surrounding the hanging lights. The road curves up and to the left, leading to the front gate of the garrison.

Soon, you stand below the gargoyles on the battlements, wondering in the dim snowy night if they are truly inanimate. A voice calls out to you from a window high above in the gatehouse. "What business this night?"
