Hey Mike,

I left all my D&D stuff back in NE. I think I gave you a copy of my Character the last time we played. I know it was for ever ago but if you still have a copy it would help me out alot. Otherwise I will just have to go off memory. I remember alot but not exact onl lvl and stats ect. I will try to get ahold of my old stuff but its kind of hard being in England for the nest 3 years. Anyway this sounds promising keep me posted when you really get things rolling ect.

I've been through all the material I have Jason, and haven't found him. I found all your other D&D characters, all your Marvel characters, and even your Traveller characters.. but no Nanigata Sad

Let me know what you can remember, and I'll help with what I can.

The current xp total for Nanigata is:
300,143 / 497,861

Also, you have a +1 sickle and a ring of warmth

To convert to Pathfinder, we can't just plug that xp into it.. we need to use the xp to find your 2nd edition levels, then use them.

-digs out Zac's PHB-

300,143 = samurai 9
497, 861 = the static xp for rogue = Ninja 12

our custom Ninja rules, which would still apply to using ninja abilities:
no armor of any kind
called shot at 1/2 penalty
move silently, hide in shadows, climb walls, find-remove-set traps, hear noise
tumbling, swimming, rope use, tightrope walking, heraldry, etiquette, disguise, observation, an enemy language, ninjitsu society, make poisons, anatomy
the proficiencies need to be converted to pathfinder skills and feats

Illusionist spells as per Bard progression

Followers and stronghold at 12th lvl

I think I will stick with your write up since its the only one with spells and that is how I have played him since the begining. Also I havent been able to find a Samurai class. Any ideas? I think there was something about martial arts lowering AC or inproving dex? Cant remember exactly. Also with pathfinder how does multiclass work you get to use both classes? Then do you choose which class to lvl up? I know if I used my ninja abilities before I didnt get any xp for the night after I went multi class.

The way Pathfinder does multiclass, and DnD too since 3rd edition, is that you can always use all your abilities from both classes, and the thief abilities and spellcasting have their restrictions, like armor and such, built right into them.. you can cast your illusionist spells wearing armor, for example, but if you do there is a percent chance the spell will fail [no effect, not a backfire] and the chance just goes up the heavier your armor is. All classes use the same experience chart, and then when you level up you pick which class you level up in.

Since you just had a new baby, I'll try to work on your conversion when I have time here and there Smile

Also, I think Cavalier is actually a really good fit for Samurai. As far as your martial arts, I think we can easily show that just by spending skills and feats in the right places Smile

I was looking around last night and found a samurai class someone put together. It might not be something you would allow but im not a big fan of the cavalier for a Samurai class. I will post the link when I get a chance and you can take a look. Maybe wwe could make a few adjustments on it if you feel it is overpowered somehow. Here is the link I found it at you will have to download a pdf file mediafire.com/ElghinnLightbringer

I read through that samurai class, and I really like it. The ancestral weapon stuff is similar to the new Magus spellsword weapon abilities, and I like how there are so many techniques to choose from, just like all the different sword styles. I don't know if you've ever seen it, but it reminded me of an anime series called Rurouni Kenshin, which is a good thing. With the magical effects on your weapon, I'm not sure about actually seeing flames burst from it.. having at least the effects, though, is no problem.

Two things I'm still wondering about though.. you have that new katana, but it couldn't be considered an ancestral weapon, I don't think. The other thing - to learn the techniques, you'll have to have an actual trainer you can visit.

Well its all up to you in the end. As for the weapon I was going to include some family history in the writings on the blade. All weapons have to start at some point before they can become ancesteral. As for learning the techniques I thought maybe I can start looking around the Dreamworld for one or posably finding a spell of some kind that would let me connect to an acesteral spirit that could help train me or explain the techniques. Maybe I can do some research in a library if we ever find a big enough one. Its been awhile since I have played so I cant think ofa spell at the moment but maybe I can ask Billaro or Hannible if they have anyway to do something like that I would be willing to pay or provide some kind of service for any kind of help. I will think more on it and see what I can come up with. We could possibly tweek it if you think the weapon thing is out of control. I dont know just throughing out some ideas. But the grandparents are here and the baby so it might take a bit for me to get alot of research done on things. Alright catch you later Mike.

The Dreamworld provides an excellent solution for any kind of training. All you need to do now is find the right individual Smile Also, finding an actual ancestor of your own might not help, since you don't come from samurai heritage. However, in finding a samurai in the Dreamlands to train you, you could conceivably kill two birds with one stone.

This could provide all sorts of really good, classically Japanese training-story opportunities, such as learning lost secret techniques, etc.

Well if finding a trainer of some sort in the Dreamlands is a acceptable way to go about it and you are happy with the way the samurai class is laid out. Then I guess when I get the oppertunity I will start looking for a trainer or Samurai master of some sort. The city we are in is a pretty big one correct? Also how would you want to go about it since I already have lvls in Samurai if I need training first should I just treat myslef as a fighter and save up all my feats ect... until I find a trainer then after a acceptable amount tof training I can begin to spend the feats I should have had already or im open for suggestions on how to make everything flow correctly?

Yeah, Dylath-Leen is a pretty big city. It has a definite seedy/dark tint to it, but you never know what you might find.

I think it would be ok to apply everything from the samurai class before finding a sensei, except for things listed as 'techniques' in the description, or the sword-imbuing thing.

Starting on Nanigata's conversion Smile

First thing up, and this might be disturbing at first, is to take his lower of two levels, 9, and divide by 3. We then add that to his higher, for a total of 15. This is your character level. You can take those 15 levels and divide them up between Ninja and Samurai however you choose (even something like sam 10/ ninja 5 if you wanted.) Don't worry, if we didn't he'd actually be as powerful as a 21st level character in Pathfinder, so...

The power level gets ramped up a bit, and expect to see your hit points among other things go up quite a bit.

Anyway, I'll wait on the next step til you decide how you want to split your 15.

it might help if I knew the bonuses and such for the ninja class. I know the bard spell thing but other than that should I just go off rogue progression?

Doh!! I forgot to post the Ninja.. sorry. Here are the unconverted details. The conversion document for 2e to 3e D&D explains how to convert proficiencies into skills and feats.

Minimum ability scores: dex 13, con 14, wis 14, agi(no longer used) 13
Weapon restrictions: no large size weapons
Armor restrictions: to use abilities no armor may be worn
Proficiencies: tumbling, swimming, rope use, tightrope walking, heraldry, etiquette, disguise, observation, enemy language, knowledge of ninjitsu society, poison making, anatomy.

Abilities:
The ninja may strike at specific parts of the body at one half the usual called shot penalty.
Move silently, hide in shadows, climb walls, find and remove traps, set traps, hear noise.
Illusionist, with no access to the schools of necromancy, evocation or abjuration. Access to spell levels progresses as a bard.
At 12th level a ninja begins to attract followers and my set up a stronghold.

Done! And yeah, I imagine it was. The nice thing from this point forward though is that all characters share the same xp chart, and whenever you make a level you are free to choose which class you level. That, plus you can use both classes (obeying armor restrictions, etc., of course) all the time.

Sorry Mike but just to clarify. Will I be able to learn techniques or the sword thing later on after I find a sensai? Because alot of the techniques mimic feats and it will effect what feats I take and wich ones i dont depenting on if and when I would get techniques. Just something to think about if you get a sec. scratch

Yep, you'll start getting all those after you've got a sensei.

I think I'm going to start doing called shots as a separate AC, on an as-needed basis. That's how it was always done in various modules, and for things like beholders. In that case, I'd give ninjas a +2 to called shots.
